Skimming a Plasterboard Wall: A Step-by-Step Guide from York Plasterers A and B Plastering York

Introduction to Skimming a plasterboard wall

Skimming a plasterboard wall is a great way to achieve a smooth, even finish before painting or wallpapering. It's also a relatively simple DIY project that can be completed in just a few hours. In this guide, we'll take you through the process of skimming a plasterboard wall, step-by-step, so you can achieve a professional-looking finish.

Materials Needed

Plasterboard joint filler

Plastering trowel

Plastering hawk

Plastering knife

Sandpaper

Water ( do not think about ready mixed plaster its crap)

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

The first step in skimming a plasterboard wall is to prepare the surface. This involves removing any loose or flaking plaster and filling any holes or cracks. You can use a plasterboard joint filler for this, which is available at most DIY stores. Simply apply the filler to the holes or cracks using a plastering knife and smooth it out until it's flush with the surface of the wall.

Step 2: Apply the Skim Coat

Once the surface is prepared, it's time to apply the skim coat. This is a thin layer of plaster that's applied to the surface of the wall to create a smooth, even finish. To apply the skim coat, mix the plaster according to the manufacturer's instructions and then transfer it to a plastering hawk. Hold the hawk in one hand and the plastering trowel in the other, then use the trowel to smooth the plaster onto the wall, working in small sections.

It's important to work quickly when applying the skim coat, as the plaster will start to dry after a few minutes. Once you've covered the entire wall, use the trowel to smooth out any bumps or ridges, working in one direction to create a consistent finish.

If you do this right sanding should not be needed

Step 3: Sand the Surface

Once the skim coat has dried, it's time to sand the surface. This will remove any bumps or ridges and create a smooth, even finish. Use a fine-grit sandpaper and sand the surface in a circular motion, taking care not to sand too much in one area. Once you've finished sanding, wipe the wall down with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

Step 4: Apply a Second Coat (Optional but preferable)

If you find that the first coat of plaster wasn't enough to achieve a smooth finish, you can apply a second coat. Repeat the process of mixing, applying and smoothing the plaster, then sand the surface once it's dry.

Step 5: Finish

Congratulations, you've now completed the process of skimming a plasterboard wall! At this point, the wall is ready for painting or wallpapering.
